Our Story

Like many things in life, Nine Zen came to us unexpectedly and serendipitously. My mother, in between jobs, was itching to start something new. Something different.

Meanwhile I’m fresh out of college, jobless, in the middle of a pandemic, struggling with a million questions about my life and my future.

Living through a pandemic was (and continues to be) incredibly trying, but it made us realize the importance of cultivating peace in our lives. It made us realize how important it is to surround yourself with things that make you feel at home. These things, we found, are what give us the strength to remain positive and optimistic even when things seem hopeless. And so, we realized we wanted to create something that made people feel peace.

After many ideas were thrown around, we landed on one: sleepwear.

Now this only makes sense if you know that for as long as I can remember, my mother and I have been completely pajama-obsessed. We’ve tried it all. Every cut, fabric, and pattern you can think of. And for both of us, lounging in your favorite pair of buttery soft pajamas is as close as it gets to meditation (without actually doing it). It makes us feel calm, happy, content.

Realizing this felt like a lightbulb going off in our heads.

From that moment on we knew we had to try. Maybe it would remain a dream, but maybe it could be something more.

And so, we started with one pajama. Then two. Then three more.

Day by day we kept cultivating and creating this feeling of peace through our designs. Then before we knew it, Nine Zen was born.

It’s been years since we took that leap of faith and it’s safe to say that it hasn’t been easy. There’s been many times we’ve felt completely out of our depth. Times that we’ve questioned ourselves, our decisions, and our capabilities. However, we’ve stuck through it and every step of the way we have been so thankful for the opportunity to do something we are so passionate about. We create each and every piece with the thought and hope that it will make you feel beautiful, happy, and at peace. We want more than anything to give you that “Zen” feeling that inspires us each and every day.
